HEADS UP ... WHAT'S NEW AT CORO? Corolation Has a New Look: We’ve revised our newsletter’s content and format. Please email your feedback and suggestions to us. Join Us for AlumNights: Save the Date: New York @ Night takes place July 15. It’s 8 p.m. on a Friday night and your work is done, but for some people, it’s just beginning. What goes on in the city at night? Who’s on the streets? Who is working while you’re sleeping? What parts of the city come alive at night and why? Here’s an opportunity to look at our city in a new “light.” Stops will include one of New York City's Traffic Management Centers and a visit to the Bowery Residents Committees servicing the homeless.
To reserve your spot, e-mail rsvp@coro.org. Space is limited, so don’t wait to sign up! This event is brought to you by the Coro Alumni Advisory Board. Please contact us with any questions. Highlights from Coro's 2005 Lewis Rudin Awards Dinner: Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2005 Lewis Rudin Awards Dinner a big success! This year’s dinner was our most successful on record, reaching our goal of $500,000 in support of Coro's programs. We were proud to celebrate this year’s honorees—Rev. Dr. Floyd Flake, Gael Greene, Richard Holbrooke and John Whitehead—with nearly 400 guests. The evening’s success reflected an impressive joint effort of Coro’s board, staff and alumni. We are grateful for the complementary words many attendees shared with us both that night and in the following weeks about the fun of the event and the trajectory of Coro as an organization. We look forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions. Please contact Michael Hirschhorn or Heather Troup with your thoughts or suggestions. There were many highlights from this year’s dinner. Everyone we spoke with seemed to have been particularly moved by one honoree or another… many were impressed with Floyd Flake’s accomplishments in his Queens’ community or Gael Greene’s heartfelt plea to help feed the hungry of New York. Others were inspired by the modest words of John Whitehead and his reflections on Lewis Rudin. Richard Holbooke had to miss the event at the last minute, but Samantha Power—Pulitzer Prize-winning author on human rights issues—offered a rousing depiction of Holbrooke and his accomplishments. The venue was beautiful and I think we all agreed that the food was incredible. Standing on a pier in the Hudson River, many guests noticed large boats pulling in and out of surrounding docks throughout the evening. Executive Director Michael Hirschhorn kicked off the presentations with a humorous look at Coro’s program and mission through the discovery of an ancient Coro planning document and photos of Coro’s alumni. We were also grateful for the enlightening and humorous remarks by our presenters Fred Terrell, Liz Smith and Deborah Wright. Jonathan Plutzik and Peter Neger both spoke on behalf of the Coro Board of Directors and Bill Rudin set the tone with gracious remarks about his father, the Rudin honorees and Coro. Photographic highlights of the event will be posted on our website in the coming weeks. Please contact Seth Hufford, if you are interested in hosting two high school student interns for five weeks this summer. Leadership New York: On Wednesday June 1, the members of Leadership New York XVI gathered at the home of Michael Hirschhorn, Coro New York’s Executive Director, to celebrate their yearlong exploration of New York City issues. The 45 new members of the Coro alumni community bestowed class awards on one another while enjoying delectable Thai food and tasty beverages. We look forward to these leaders’ impact on the City for many years to come…and to their continued involvement in Coro. Congratulations to all! New American Leaders: On May 26th, the New American Leaders class participated in a strategy day focused on building immigrant political power. They explored the question, “How have immigrant communities gained political power in New York City?” and focused on Dominican and Chinese community political power development. Participants began the day with a panel discussion on political power structures at the New York City Council offices. Panelists included: Margaret Chin, Deputy Executive Director, Asian Americans for Equality; John C. Liu, New York City Council Member ; Moises Perez, Executive Director, Alianza Dominicana; and Andrea Batista Schlesinger, Executive Director, Drum Major Institute for Public Policy. Following the panel, participants split into two teams and explored elected, organizational and union political power through interviews with: Hiram Monserrate, New York City Council Member; Sherry Kane, Communications Director, UNITE-HERE; and Wing Lam, Executive Director, Chinese Staff and Workers’ Association. The next strategy day takes place on June 23rd and will focus on money as it relates to large economic development projects. Special attention will be given to discussing the development of the West Side Stadium project. |
