HEADS UP ... WHAT'S NEW AT CORO? Little tanning or downtime at Coro headquarters this summer as we launch our first-ever year-round program for NYC high school students and gear up for September's incoming Leadership New York and Fellows classes (see the Catch Up With Coro section). Welcome to our twelve incoming Coro Fellows in Public Affairs; and thanks to 32 alumni who participated by reading applications and interviewing Leadership New York applicantswe are in the final stages of selecting the LNY XVII class. Sun shines as Coro receives $50,000 anonymous grant through Carnegie Corporation Coro’s Executive Director opened the mail recently to a pleasant surprisenotification that Coro had been designated as one of 406 artistic, cultural and social service institutions in NYC to receive a one-time $50,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation, made possible by an anonymous donor (recent speculation in the New York Times suggested that Mayor Michael Bloomberg is the "anonymous” donor). According to the grant letter, Coro was selected as an organization playing a key role in advancing civic opportunity for immigrants, families and youth. “We believe institutions like yours,” noted Carnegie, “are responsible for giving New York City the unparalleled community spirit that has made it the envy of the world.” Credit for this sentiment is equally shared by our participants, alumni, Board and staff! We were thrilled to receive this unexpected gift, and feel that it honors the accomplishments of the entire Coro family over the last year in launching important endeavors such as the Coro Alumni Advisory Board, the ReInvest program for seniors, and Exploring Leadership as a year-round youth program. Upcoming Coro Alumni Programming Save the dates:
Network with old and new Coro friends at “Making the Case for the Arts,” the upcoming AlumNights event on Wednesday, September 21, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. New York City's arts and cultural organizations have played key roles in local empowerment zone and economic development projects, filled a void in public education, and are the top draw for the City's tourists, yet they face multiple challenges. "Making the Case for the Arts" will examine how arts and cultural organizationsand the individual artists who are the heart of their workhave expanded their reach and impact to serve their audiences and reach those goals. Invited panelists include The Hon. Kate D. Levin, Commissioner, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; Ruby Lerner, CEO, Creative Capital; Rory MacPherson, Wallace Foundation; Lowery Stokes Sims, Executive Director, The Studio Museum in Harlem; and Steve Tennen, Executive Director, Arts Connection. The cost is $10 at the door; location to be confirmed shortly. Contact mchun@coro.org to RSVP. AlumNights are fun and thoughtful events exclusively for Coro alumni, providing opportunities to explore the substantive issues of our day and to expand your alumni networks while catching up with old friends and classmates. Also, mark your calendars for another Alumni event - New York Cares Day! On Saturday, October 22 we'll be joining forces with 8,000 volunteers from across the region to paint a brighter future for New York City students. Come on out for a day of good clean fun, painting, cleaning and revitalizing more than 100 public schools. Friends and family (kids over 12) welcome! More details will be sent out in September. Contact Mona Chun at mchun@coro.org for more information. Transitions at Coro Erica Waples off to graduate school Last November, when we hired Erica Waples, Coro’s Program and Development Associate, she told us she would be headed to graduate school in a year. We thought that we could persuade her to stay at Coro forever, especially after all the good times she enjoyed working on Selection Day and the Rudin Awards Dinner, among a host of other projects and tasks. Although our attempts to keep Erica to ourselves failed, we are proud to wish her much success as she enrolls at New York University this fall at the Wagner School of Public Service. Erica is a candidate for a Master of Public Administration degree, with an international public finance specialization. She will continue working in the field of leadership as a Research Assistant at Wagner’s Research Center for Leadership in Action. Erica can be reached via email at erwaples@yahoo.com. Andrew White stepping down After three exceptional seasons as the fearless director of Leadership New York (LNY), Andrew White has reluctantly decided that he needs to focus his energies on directing his fast-growing institute, the Center for New York City Affairs at the New School, and on teaching graduate students about government, the media and the politics of policy. Andrew became famous for encouraging LNY participants to “leave their biases at the door” and bring an open mind to thinking about public affairs in NYC. He can be reached at whitea@newschool.edu. Seth Hufford doubly engaged We are very pleased to announce that staff member Seth Hufford has become engaged…twice! He will soon marry now-fiancé Dorie Taylor. Additionally, he will soon marry responsibility for directing Leadership New York into his current role as Coro's Director of Strategic Partnerships. Seth will partner in leading LNY with a to-be-hired consultant with expertise in complex NYC policy issues as well as the dynamics of leadership development (see position announcement below). Seth can be reached at shufford@coro.org. Seeking Program Consultant for Coro’s Leadership New York Coro New York seeks a consultant to partner with our program director in shaping and implementing Leadership New York, Coro’s highly respected civic leadership-development program for mid-career professionals from across the public, private and nonprofit sectors. We are looking for a consultant with in-depth understanding of and demonstrated passion for a) New York City civic issues and the interplay of the sectors in the City’s complex public policy arena; and b) contemporary models and dynamics of leadership and leadership development. The participants explored emerging public policy; developed strategic thinking and team-building skills; and built organizational and community-organizing capacity. New American Leaders also challenged participants to take stock of their individual approach to operating as leaders, helping each to explore his or her own personal vision, purpose and core values as agents of change.
