DISASTER RELIEF FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina's destruction and devastation of several Gulf Coast states, many Coro community members have expressed an interest in contributing to disaster relief efforts.

FEMA has suggested that monetary contributions are the best way to provide for the long-term needs of hurricane victims. A host of organizations are currently accepting monetary donations, including the Red Cross (www.redcross.org) and Oxfam (www.oxfam.org). A more extensive list of established charities working on disaster relief can be found at www.charitynavigator.org. A number of local schools and universities are also collecting clothing and material goods for incoming students who were displaced from their homes. More information on these efforts is available online at participating schools' websites.

HEADS UP…WHAT'S NEW AT CORO?

Many new faces at Coro NY this month. With September have come several new cohorts of Coro program participants. Exploring Leadership's fall season is off to a lively start, while this year's Leadership New York class members wet their feet with a logic study and our new Fellows begin their first placements (see the Catch Up With Coro section). We have also welcomed several new staff members to our office (see the Transitions at Coro section).

You can help recruit the next Fellows class!

Did you have a great summer intern who will be finishing college this spring? Encourage her to apply for the 2006-2007 Fellows Program class. Taking a trip to your Alma Mater this fall? Let us know; we can help you prepare an info session on campus. Live out of town? Join a panel discussion about Coro in your area and help bring your experience to other potential leaders nationwide. Have a friend looking to make a career move? Suggest Coro as a way to go.

Wherever you are, you can help cultivate leadership by letting folks know about the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs. Please contact Mona Chun mchun@coro.org to assist in reaching out to potential recruits this fall. If you have any suggestions for career-oriented events or similar outreach opportunities, let us know. Help make our next Fellows class a diverse and dynamic group! Deadline for applications is January 6th, 2006.

Announcing Coro's 2006 Rudin Awards Dinner Committee Co-Chairs

We are pleased to announce that Board members Peter Neger and Nancy Youman (LNYVII) are leading the charge as Co-Chairs of Coro's annual benefit dinner. We are also thrilled to announce that both Liz Greenstein (LNY XI) and Dan Cohen (LNY XVI) have agreed to act as Alumni Chairs. Liz and Dan - along with an additional couple of to-be-confirmed Chairs from among alumni of the Fellows and Coro's other programs - will be working with Coro board and staff to identify honorees, fundraise, encourage alumni participation and build on our 2005 Dinner success. Funds from the Rudin Awards Dinner comprise one-third of our budget and are used to fund Coro programs serving a range of New Yorkers - from teens to older adults. If you are interested in joining the alumni committee as a class leader or would like to suggest names for Rudin honorees, please contact Heather Troup at (212) 248-2935 extension 309, or htroup@coro.org.

CATCH UP WITH CORO NY PROGRAMS

Back to school for Exploring Leadership students

On Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005, the 25 students engaged in Coro's Exploring Leadership program delivered their final presentations at the NYC Department of Education. Each of four groups presented a summary of their research and recommendations on an education equity issue affecting their school; issues included school funding, school safety, high stakes testing and teacher quality. Congratulations to our young leaders on completing the first intensive phase of their year-round program! Exploring Leadership continues as an after-school program through the fall and spring.

This summer, the students participated in internships in education organizations across the City, interviewed key education leaders, and examined how the various sectors address education issues in New York City. Internship placements included the New York State Department of Education, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the New York Immigration Coalition and several other institutions. During the school year, participants will take what they've learned back to their school communities to educate their peers in how to take action on a pressing education issue. Best of luck to our youngest Coro class as they break new ground with Exploring Leadership's new season!

Fellows' government sector placements underway

The 2005-2006 Coro Fellows kicked off their year with a logic study presentation in and about the Chinatown(s) of New York on Monday, September 12
th. The group examined the Chinese diaspora in three concentrated regions of New York City - lower Manhattan, Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Flushing, Queens. The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) served as our partner organization for the week. Coro staff and alumni of both Leadership New York and the Fellows Program were in attendance. We'd like to thank David Chen (Executive Director), Steve Yip (Director of Operations) and Mabel Long (Executive Assistant) at CPC for helping us set up logistics for the study.

The Fellows have also recently started their government sector placements. Placements include partnerships with the following offices:

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer; State Senator Liz Krueger; Bronx Borough President's Office; New York City Councilmember Gale Brewer; New York City Council, Investigations Division; NYC Department of Small Business Services; NYC Department of Homeless Services; NYC Department of Youth and Community Development; NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; NYC Department of Parks and Recreation; NYC Department of Consumer Affairs; CUNY - La Guardia Community College.

LNY XVII explores the logic of Chinatown

Leadership New York begins its seventeenth year bigger and better. This group of 64 mid-career managers from the public, private and nonprofit sectors met on September 7
th for their orientation day. They spent the day getting to know a little bit about themselves and each other while performing a community logic study of Manhattan's Chinatown. The program kicked into high gear with the opening retreat on Saturday, September 17th and Sunday, September 18th at the Garrison Institute in Garrison, New York.

The beginning of the program year also brings with it an expanded program staff. Seth Hufford, Coro's Director of Strategic Partnerships, has been promoted to direct the Leadership New York program. He is joined by a consultant team with a depth of experience in both leadership and public policy issues: Marta Siberio and Mitty Owens.
