Catch up with Coro New York Programs Exploring Leadership students switch into teachers for a day! Two down, two to go! Coro’s Exploring Leadership program participants are busy preparing and completing their peer education presentations the culmination of their research through the past several months. Each group has surveyed a sampling of their respective school communities to obtain the input of students and teachers on the issues at hand before presenting their findings. They have also conducted interviews with key education leaders to add breadth of perspective to their research. At Urban Academy, the students examined the advantages and disadvantages posed by the imposition of statewide Regents exams, and also discussed the process by which small schools are opened and administered. At School for Democracy and Leadership, students provided an information session on the Campaign for Fiscal Equity to better inform their peers of the initiative’s proposal to reform New York State's school finance system. Among the many appreciative and enlightened responses to the students’ presentations from their peers, one student at the School for Democracy and Leadership noted that he hadn’t previously known of any funding sources for New York City schools other than the Board of Education, while another was surprised to learn of the disparity in government funding for urban and suburban schools. At Urban Academy, many students were so inspired by their peers’ projects as to inquire about joining next year’s cohort of Exploring Leadership program participants! Congratulations to the students at Urban Academy and the School for Democracy and Leadership on successfully completing their peer education projects, and for informing their peers of important issues that concern them both on a personal, and community level! Best of luck to the remaining groups from the High School for Public Service and Bushwick School for Social Justice, as their presentation dates approach! For more information, contact Laura Shmishkiss, Program Director of Exploring Leadership, at (212) 248-2935 ext. 301. Call for summer internship placements for Coro’s Exploring Leadership students! The Exploring Leadership program participants will be spending their summer exploring the field of education from within! The high-school students will begin their summer internships in July 2006. These internships will not only serve to relate the students’ Coro explorations to real-world experience, but will also provide a unique opportunity for host organizations to gain the assistance of our talented youth for a substantial length of time. If you currently work for an education-oriented organization whether it be in the nonprofit, government or private sector contact us for more information on how you can become an internship host for one or two Exploring Leadership students! If you know anyone else that fits the bill and may be able to host one or two extraordinary summer interns, we would also like to hear from you! Internships will run for five weeks between July and August. Please contact Laura Shmishkiss for more information on how to become an internship host this summer, or to refer us to a friend or associate! |
Meet participants of the Exploring Leadership program and learn more about their activities at the upcoming Coro Open House on February 22nd! Contact Whitney Braunstein for more information or to RSVP. |
