Malia Cohen, FPPA 2001

It was during my senior year at Fisk University that I began to look for opportunities to figure out my next steps after college. I found, applied, and was accepted to the Coro Fellows in Public Affairs program in St. Louis, MO.

Coro exposed me to a wide array of professional environments in which I learned valuable skills applicable to all aspects of my life and work. It was with the support of Coro that I was prepared and motivated to continue my education. From my experience in the Coro network, I was exposed to the Heinz School of Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, where I completed my graduate work.

Currently, I serve as the Managing Partner with Power Forward Consulting, a public affairs, media and policy consulting firm. Power Forward helps businesses and nonprofits create public policy. Over the years I have developed expertise in policy, public affairs, media relations, grassroots and political campaigns.

Coro’s trainings taught me how to serve as a bridge and connect diverse communities, how to communicate more effectively, and most importantly, how to critically analyze large systems by isolating and understanding the working parts. Because of the leadership tools acquired through Coro, my civic engagement reaches all corners of the community. I have been motivated to run for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, District 10. In addition, I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Emerge CA, New Leaders Council, SF Conservation Corp and The Community Leadership Academy & Emergency Response Project.
