Exploring Leadership Program Updates

Pie Ranch
Youth Fellows explore "Food Justice" with a trip to Pie Ranch

As part of their Fall component, the Coro Youth Fellows explored the issue of “Food Justice” and what youth can do to address it. They rode a school bus to Pie Ranch in Pescadero, CA to learn about organic farming and studied the entire food system, from seed to food plate, in an effort to understand how food reaches their table and the implications that has for their personal health, the health of their community, and the sustainability of the planet.

CAP Project Coaching
Youth Fellows partner with Coro "Project Coaches" to address the Achievement Gap

During two recent seminars, Youth Fellows were paired up with volunteer Coro “Project Coaches” from Bay Area non-profit, business, and government organizations, in addition to EL alumni. The Project Coaches and alumni served as sounding boards for the Youth Fellows, providing their perspectives, resources, and feedback in the design and implementation of the Youth Fellows' Community Action Projects. The projects are all charged with addressing the achievement gap at their public high schools in San Francisco and the East Bay. See photos and read more »

Alumni Spotlight:
Craig McMicken, FPPA 1954

It was October 1, 1952, and I was sitting in the San Francisco office of Westinghouse Electric for sales in Northern California. Don Fletcher was there. He suggested that I apply for an “Internship in Public Affairs” sponsored by the Coro Foundation. I was single, owned my car, and had $2,000 in the bank, so I quit Westinghouse. Coro seemed like the stepping stone that would give me entry into city management, my choice for a future career.

Fellows Program in Public Affairs Updates

Fellows at Media Week
Coro Fellows Explore News Media

The Coro Fellows started Media Focus Week excited to learn how the media industry functions. As they dived headlong into the newsrooms of journalists grappling with the new ways media is developed and consumed, they gained more knowledge than any of them anticipated on the state of media and its role in public affairs.

Victoria Benson
Coro Fellows on Political Campaign Placement

One of the most exciting and eye-opening moments was going on the “Only in California” Bus Tour.  We started in National City and went up to Redding.  I was able to see the diverse political environments in California first-hand.  Additionally, supporters of the opposing candidate Gavin Newsom met us at some of our stops and it was interesting to see how the dynamics played out between the opposing groups in a fight to gain the most media coverage from the event. - Victoria Benson, Class of 2011

Eric Sanabria
All Politics is Local

Tip O’Neil was right – all politics is local. This concept is now a commonly repeated adage in popular American discourse, but it was one that I did not take to heart until my campaign placement. Through my experience, I observed the dynamics of a local race, the personalities that drive them, and the impact they have on their immediate communities.  - Eric Sanabria, Class of 2011

Fellows in the Washington Post

As part of an exciting new collaboration with the Washington Post, the Coro Fellows from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and New York are featured as commentators for the Washington Post column “On Leadership.” Each week, Fellows from different centers respond to a leadership question. Their responses are published online at the Washington Post’s website and the best responses are printed in the Sunday print edition. We are very excited about this new partnership. Not only does it bring visibility to Coro, it also provides the Fellows from across the country with an opportunity to interact in the virtual world through this online dialogue about current leadership issues.

Christine Landon
Coro Board Member: Christine Landon - Vice-chair

Christine Landon, Senior Director of Executive and Next Generation Leadership Development at Agilent Technologies, is serving in her second year on Coro’s Board of Directors.
