Coro Fellows Engage the San Francisco Unified School District

During the second week of September, the new class of Coro Fellows spent four days examining the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). They met with elected officials, school administrators, labor representatives, teachers, principals, students, and parents. They visited school sites and attended a School Board meeting. After synthesizing all they learned, the Fellows made a public report on Change and Innovation in the SFUSD.

Jason Molina
The Fellows' Analysis of SFUSD

“Nothing less than a sense of urgency and action is appropriate in addressing the achievement gap in SFUSD.  Action and leadership resonates within the educational system. This same sense of urgency and action is needed by all San Franciscans to encourage a sense of ownership by everyone who has a vested interest in developing the next generation’s workforce.” – Jason Molina, Coro Fellow.

Fellows Presentimg
Community Reaction

The Fellows’ presentation generated strong interest and was attended by the Superintendent of the SFUSD, the President of the School Board, the President and Vice President of United Educators of SF, the CA Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, and dozens of other interested parents, teachers, and students.
“For those who didn't go, the Coro Fellows spent an hour giving an in-depth, incisive, vivid role play about the various challenges and opportunities in the San Francisco public school system…I left feeling far more informed about the source of the problems.” – Kelly Close, SFUSD Parent

Saturday Exploration: "Access to Higher Education"

In the morning, the high school juniors participated in a series of activities where they discussed the benefits of a college education, factors that contribute to inequities in access to college, and what resources and strategies can be used to overcome these disparities. In the afternoon, they learned about campus life by interviewing EL Alumni who are students at Cal and competing in a campus scavanger hunt.
