HLP Program Components

Coro’s HLP empowers its Health Associates by increasing their relevant knowledge, expanding their skill set, and providing opportunities for practical experience. Health Associates, in turn, are better able to provide valuable contributions to the community and a means for improving the workforce capacity of partner organizations.

HLP's Key Components

  • Community Collaborative Capacity Building Projects
  • Coro Leadership Training/Site Visits
  • Expert-Based Seminars/Case Studies
  • Personal Mentorship

Community Collaborative Capacity Building Projects

Beyond simply preparing its participants to become stronger leaders in their respective organizations, Coro’s Health Associates have an immediate and direct impact on healthcare in Los Angeles County. Specifically, teams of Health Associates complete a predetermined, community collaborative project with partner organizations. The projects enhance each partner organization’s capacity to provide quality care, access cross sector relationships and secure additional resources. Health Associates are positioned to utilize resources and develop networks across health sectors to achieve the objectives of each project.

Coro Leadership Training/Site Visits

Coro’s monthly leadership training sessions offer participants hands-on training to increase their capacity to make meaningful and lasting decisions within their respective healthcare organizations and community collaborative projects. These sessions provide leadership training across health sectors and facilitate broad-based social change by enabling participants to work collaboratively with persons of various cultures, programs, professions, socioeconomic statuses, organizational levels, and systems. The training sessions also develop Health Associates’ analytic, communication and problem solving skills, in order to strengthen the quality and creativity of decision-making in the healthcare field.

Site visits allow the Coro Health Associates to experience first-hand some of the leading healthcare centers, hospitals, and administrative offices in the region. These visits also present an opportunity to discuss the challenges confronted and the solutions applied by healthcare professionals in the actual settings in which the experiences occur.

Expert-Based Seminars/Case Studies

The expert-based component to the HLP curriculum provides participants with practical and holistic instruction about the county, state and national healthcare system. The seminars and case studies enhance contributions to the Health Associates’ organizations and provoke discussion to address current issues faced by today’s healthcare organizations. Coro’s HLP didactic curriculum is prepared and delivered by industry leaders and experts, including UCLA and USC professors and prominent members of the Health Advisory Committee. Expert seminars and case studies are given on a variety of timely and relevant healthcare-related topics, including healthcare history, finance, policy, insurance and workforce.

Coro Health Associates also engage in highly interactive discussions during each seminar. Case studies are presented and Health Associates collaborate in small groups to develop creative solutions for discussion and presentation to the collective group. This process allows the integration of health topics with leadership development skills and provides opportunities for the Health Associates to practically apply theory and devise “real-life” measurable solutions.

Personal Mentorship

Each Health Associate is matched with a leading healthcare professional and required to attend a monthly meeting with their mentor. Health Associates are provided with a set of objectives but are encouraged to develop their own personal and professional healthcare goals to discuss with their mentors. These meetings provide each participant with the opportunity to seek professional and highly individualized advice and training.

The mentor component of the HLP is designed to reinforce network-building across healthcare sectors and to equip Health Associates with the guidance to have measurable and lasting impacts within their respective organizations and the industry as a whole.
