Coro Youth Program Alumni Profiled in LA Times

Jacqueline Rodriguez, alumni of the 2006 Youth: Exploring Leadership Program (ELP) is on her way to becoming a star! This past November, she sat down with Los Angeles Times staff writer, Maria Hsin to discuss her experiences as a Coro Fellow. Jacqueline, one of eight children, spoke of her desire to be a agent of change in her community and a mentor for her brothers and sisters.

Jacqueline learned of Coro through a meeting with a college counselor. The then 16 year old applied to ELP -- a two-month high school leadership program designed to develop core leadership tools including effective communication skills, logic and analysis, interview skills, life skills and team building.

Speaking of her home in South LA, Jacqueline tearfully recalls teachers who have told her that she and her peers will not amount to anything but she refuses to accept that label. According to Jacqueline, Coro has “showed me that I can do something. It made me believe that maybe I’m the one to create change.”
