Helen Dewar (1936-2006) Coro Alumna gets Virginia Honor
Helen Dewar’s long and legendary career with the Washington Post will be saluted in an entry in the upcoming Dictionary of Virginia Biography, published by the Library of Virginia. The entry will highlight her achievements and include impressions and memories about her fiery reporting style.
The Dewar entry will also make known how Coro was pivotal in Helen’s going east (she was a Sacramento native). In a letter from her father, Herbert Dewar, to Coro co-founder Don Fletcher in 1958, he writes: “When I visited you in your office, you may recall, I asked what Helen should attempt to do upon the completion of her Coro internship and you made the declaration you felt she should go to Washington. This, as you probably know, she has done...” And some might say, Washington would never be the same again.
Coro received a generous bequest from Helen, and we remain deeply grateful.
