The Exploring Leadership Program

Who We Are    Launched in 1998, Exploring Leadership (EL) is a full-time summer and part time academic year program that prepares high school juniors for opportunities in the 21st century workforce and higher education by engaging them to become active citizens and to improve their communities. EL participants are thirty-six entering 11th graders – eighteen in the East Bay and eighteen in San Francisco – who reflect the racial and socioeconomic diversity of the Bay Area and demonstrate the desire to both expand their leadership skills and make a difference in their school and neighborhood communities.

 We are so excited to announce the expansion of the Exploring Leadership Program next month. We will reach an additional 180 students at 12 public high schools in the Bay Area. We invite you to watch this compelling story of how Coro’s leadership training transforms individuals and communities.

Mission     We strive to inform, inspire, and engage the next generation of Bay Area leaders by:

1. Giving young people a voice, the skills, and the confidence to make a difference in society

2. Providing young people with a deeper knowledge of our democracy and its leadership

3. Exposing young people to a variety of resources, perspectives, and experiences in order to better understand the diverse communities in which they live and learn how to take action to improve them

What We Do    Exploring Leadership uses a 10-month experiential leadership training model designed to increase students’ abilities in problem-solving, critical thinking, and goal setting, in order to give them the professional skills necessary to become facilitators and partners for community change. During the summer, the students are introduced to topics such as philanthropy, community organizing, youth entrepreneurship, public policy, and immersed in leadership skill development. During the school year the students apply what they learn to take action in their community.
