Meet A Few of Our Exploring Leadership Alumni
"I have a new understanding of how things work in the non-profit, government and business world. EL opened up my eyes and my heart and empowered me to start the first recycling program at Mission High School.”
Terence Li, EL Class’06, Mission HS ’08, Stanford
University ‘12
“At my EL internship at San Francisco City Hall I learned how to facilitate a community forum with government officials and local residents. Those same skills help me in my current role as Associate Director of a non-profit that provides services for low-income families.”
Martha Medina, EL Class’01, Balboa HS ’02, SF State University ‘07
“EL was the stepping stone I needed to take action — to use my passion and my own knowledge to make a difference in a community that I care about. I’ve recently started a peer tutoring program at my high school.”
Henna Sawhney, EL Class’07, Metropolitan Arts & Technology HS ’09
“EL taught me how to work through any hurdles that come my way and rise above challenges. Since EL, I’ve become a role model in my community and founded an African-American fraternity that focuses on community service.”
Khalid Harper, EL Class’05, Logan HS ’07, Cal State Monterey ‘11
“EL gave me the chance to grow and let me know that it’s okay to explore the world around me. The program took away the boundaries set by my school and home life. I had to start thinking for myself. I am now the Vice-President of Gonzaga’s Black Student Union.”
Janay Johnson, EL Class’03, Wallenberg HS ’04, Gonzaga University ‘08
“From working in a diverse group of EL students, I have developed a deeper understanding of empathy and tolerance. As a trustee of the UCSD Student Foundation, I am involved with making higher education more accessible and affordable.”
James Toy, EL Class’04, Washington HS ’06, UC San Diego ‘09
