Victor Palma Youth Fellows at The Sequoias Retirement Community
On Saturday, October 24th, the Youth Fellows spent the day at The Sequoias Retirement Community in San Francisco to address the issue of the digital divide. In collaboration with Senior Surf, a computer training non-profit organization that works exclusively with seniors, the Youth Fellows provided one-on-one computer tutoring to 30 senior citizens in an effort to bridge the digital divide between generations.

EL Interviews Youth Fellows Explore the Issue of The Achievement Gap
During their after school seminars, the Youth Fellows have interviewed school superintendents, teachers, counselors, parents, after-school program directors, peer mediators, civil rights lawyers, and many others, to expose them to a variety of points of views and help them to understand the barriers and solutions to closing the achievement gap at their high schools.

Coro hosts its very first Youth In Action Showcase
On Saturday, April 18th, the Coro Exploring Leadership Program held its first-ever Youth In Action Showcase Event at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. The event showcased 67 projects, led by 33 Coro Youth Fellows addressing 25 different issues at 23 Bay Area high schools.  Over 150 guests attended the event and listened to the Youth Fellows talk about the 3-phase process they went through to develop their projects, how they recruited team members, why they were motivated to take action, and how they measured their impact. The audience members then interacted one-on-one with the Youth Fellows by exploring their "teach back boards" to hear more about the issues and lessons the Youth Fellows learned from leading their projects, and ways to get involved.

On Saturday, March 21st, the Youth Fellows participated in their final Saturday Exploration by attending a day-long "Social Action Boot Camp" hosted by the non-profit media organization DoSomething.org. The Youth Fellows spent the day rotating through a variety of workshops focused on informing young people about strategies for effectively taking action. Workshops covered such topics as Online Fundraising and Advocacy, School Action, Public Relations, Communication Technologies, Managing Volunteers, and Grassroots Organizing. Eploring Leadership Pilots a School-Based Hybrid Program Model
The Exploring Leadership Program is excited to pilot a school-based hybrid program model in order to achieve two primary outcomes:
1). to expand our reach from 36 to 180 high school students served; and 2). to support our selected high school partners to reach the school districts’ balanced scorecard goals of access and equity, and academic achievement.

Coro Youth Fellows Take Action on Community Issues
During the fall and spring components of the Exploring Leadership Program, the Youth Fellows have stepped up to the challenge of applying their leadership skills training and Coro tools to take action on a pressing issue they have identified in their high school and neighborhood communities. Some of the issues include racial tension, adolescent obesity, student apathy, stress, homophobia, etc. The high school juniors have taken their CAPs (Community Action Projects) through 3 distinct phases: Discovery, Design, and Delivery.

Youth Fellows Explore The "Power of Music" 
On Saturday, February 21st, the Youth Fellows teamed up with Oakland based non-profit, Youth Movement Records, to explore the "Power of Music". They spent the day at the Fox Theater in downtown Oakland discussing the role that music plays in society and how messages in hip-hop music affect young people. In preparation for the day, they were asked to write song lyrics expressing their ideas, opinions and passion for change to President Obama.

Youth Fellows Take Action to Address Illiteracy in the Bay Area 
On Saturday, January 24th, the Youth Fellows in the Coro Exploring Leadership Program participated in their fifth Saturday Exploration by learning about the issue of "illiteracy", and strategies for addressing it in their communities. The students spent the day at the Children's Day School, a preschool-8th grade school in the Mission District of San Francisco. They were trained as reading coaches by staff members of Jumpstart and applied their training during a "Read-A-Thon" in which they tutored elementary school students.

Summer Travel Scholarships Awarded to 12 Youth Fellows
Twelve Youth Fellows will be stepping outside of their comfort zones and exploring the world as they travel abroad this summer as recipients of the Matador Travel Scholarship, a youth travel scholarship fund created by Youth Programs Manager, Ben Polansky. For many of the Youth Fellows this will be their first time traveling outside of the U.S. Ten will be traveling together to Nicaragua with the Global Glimpse Program (http://www.globalglimpse.org/), one will be going to Cambodia with WhereThereBeDragons (www.wheretherebedragons.com), and one will be going to Costa Rica with AFS (http://www.afs.org/afs_or/home). All of the programs have an emphasis on leadership development, cultural understanding, and community service.
