Our Approach to Change
Participation from many different kinds of people is the key to making significant, lasting and positive changes in our communities. Each individual holds a valuable perspective that can contribute to a deeper understanding of the systems underlying community problems. But adequate preparation and good tools are required to get the most from civic participation. This is how Coro Pittsburgh plays a role. We develop civic leaders by challenging people to evolve, both personally and professionally, into individuals who have the tools to change their environment for the better. We don’t create leaders; we bring out the leader in the person. We equip them with the tools they need to change the world around them.
Our powerful intergenerational training curriculum engages leaders at all stages of life: during high school (Youth Leadership), in the period between high school and full-time participation in the workforce (Emerging Leaders), and while established firmly in one’s career path (Executive Leadership). Additionally, Coro fosters Civic Engagement Initiatives—open to people at any stage in life—to build capacity for effective school reform in Pittsburgh, and to facilitate innovative leadership in human services, green economy, local government improvement, and community and economic development.
Our leadership curriculum is informed by the following core principles:
Experiential Learning - Continuously reflect on experience, welcome feedback from
others, and keep an open mind to new ways of thinking or doing.
Building Relationships - Through inclusive dialogue and constructive action, foster
relationships that help bring about a better quality of life for all.
Diversity - Learn from, work together with, and respect people of different points of view.
Help create an environment of inclusion.
Whole Systems Thinking - Stand back to view the whole picture, even while taking part
in the action. Look below the surface for interconnections and patterns among different
events, issues and people.
Teamwork for Results - Mobilize people to move from inclusive dialogue to constructive
actions that fulfill short- and long-term goals.
Nurturing Leadership in Others - Engage people by helping them realize and act upon
their strengths.
