About Emerging Leadership Programs

Emerging Leadership serves a unique role within our intergenerational curriculum in its emphasis on recruiting, selecting, training, and placing the next generation of civic, business and government leaders for the Pittsburgh region.  Emerging Leaders seeks to reverse the “brain drain” by creating a culture in which the talents of young people (age 17-34) are developed and utilized to build a better quality of life for all generations.

Several studies have indicated that there are not enough young people preparing for careers in politics, community service, and many regional private-sector growth industries to meet the local demand for talent in these areas. And many of those who do seek employment in these areas lack the “applied” skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. The result is a regional economy that is not performing to its potential. Emerging Leadership seeks to close these gaps in the workforce system through the following targeted leadership development initiatives: Fellows Program in Public Affairs; Public Allies Pittsburgh: Regional Internship Center; Next Leaders for Green Communities; and Running for Public Office.
