Leadership New York

Leadership New York (LNY) is a civic leadership development program for mid-career professionals from diverse backgrounds, sectors and perspectives.  The program provides the skills and knowledge individuals need to effect change in their organizations and across New York City.

Neighborhood Leadership is a 5-month, part-time leadership training program that provides individuals working to strengthen New York City’s commercial corridors with the tools, experiences, and networks they need to develop new ways to lead change in their organizations and communities.

In a time of political, economic, and social change, now more than ever, New York City’s neighborhoods and the commercial districts at their core require a unique kind of leadership:  catalysts for positive change who embrace complex challenges and bridge professional and social divisions to engage all constituents in their communities.

Alumni Voices
"Coro offered me an opportunity to dream bigger, to think critically and make long-lasting friendships with dynamic people from all walks of life. By the completion of the program, I was more confident and better prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Coro is one the best investments I have made for myself."

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

  • Build lasting relationships and networks with others working in commercial districts across New York City
  • Practice innovative leadership strategies that can be applied real-time in your careers
  • Gain exposure to key stakeholders to support innovation in your commercial revitalization efforts
  • Learn strategies for shaping your work with sessions on small business fundamentals, understanding stakeholder networks in your neighborhood, driving retail sales, and improving tenant mix.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

  • LEADERSHIP RETREAT DAYS  help individuals build their individual and collaborative capacity for leadership in order to shape and implement their organizational and personal visions for change.  The Opening Retreat will help develop and articulate long-term visions for commercial revitalization in communities and work toward successfully imbuing that vision into all aspects of the participant's organization.
  •  STRATEGY DAYS allow participants to learn about key commercial revitalization issues such as district marketing strategies, means of impacting negative public perceptions, and developing effective communication methodologies and content for tourists, local residents and workers.  Using the five-boroughs as a classroom, participants will have unique access to learn from individuals and organizations leading successful economic development and commercial revitalization efforts.

  •  NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT that is in development will allow each participant to apply their learning in real-time to better achieve desired outcomes of commercial revitalization.  Participants will have the opportunity to share project developments throughout the 5-month program as well as get feedback on outcomes and lessons learned during a follow up session in the Fall.

  • MENTORSHIP with an experienced professional in the commercial revitalization field or other related fields on a one-on-one basis to provide the opportunity to discuss career goals and plans, strategies for staying engaged and avoiding 'burn-out', staff and board of directors management tactics, and other related issues.

Coro accepts a cohort of approximately 50 individuals each year to participate in LNY. Participants join a leadership community of over 800 LNY alumni who are impacting the City as Commissioners, executive directors and CEOs, community activists, journalists, business executives, and social entrepreneurs.
