Program Structure

Leadership New York is a part-time program that begins in September and concludes in May. With the five boroughs as their classroom, Leadership New York participants test their interpretations of events and actions against opposing views. Site visits across the City include:

• schools
• corporate headquarters
• hospitals
• grassroots organizations

• prisons
• youth centers
• city agencies
• bond-rating agencies

Panel discussions and small group interviews with corporate executives, elected officials, and community activists reveal how influential New Yorkers make decisions, generate support, and collaborate to tackle the City’s challenges.

Program components include:

Opening Retreat - intensive immersion into the concepts that the participants will use and encounter throughout the program year

Issue Days - full-day Wednesday sessions that meet once a month to explore multiple perspectives on NYC’s most pressing urban policy issues. Through site visits, small group interviews, panel discussions, and other activities across the five boroughs, participants investigate the dynamics of shaping policy. Leadership New York participants examine public policy issues such as:

• criminal justice
• healthcare
• human services
• public-private partnerships
• economic development

• municipal finance
• investment in infrastructure
• globalization
• the arts
• public education

Saturday Sessions - full-day workshops that focus on leadership development topics

Affiliation Evenings - informal get-togethers for participants to share ideas and expertise

Planning Meetings - sessions organized by small teams of participants who, with input from Coro staff, develop and plan each Issue Day

Time Commitment

Participation in Leadership New York requires a significant commitment of time, resources, and energy. For nine months, participants attend an Opening Retreat, ten Issue Days, occasional Saturday and Evening Sessions, and Planning Meetings with a small team of fellow participants. Attendance is expected at all sessions and is required at the retreat and program introduction session. Participants will be asked to withdraw from the program if they miss more than three sessions.

Tuition

The tuition for the program is $4,750. Participants are encouraged to seek their employer's support to cover the cost of the program. Tuition is non-refundable once the program has started.

Frequently Asked Questions >>

The [Leadership New York] program raised my level of civic and political awareness. The monthly meetings with my peers from various industries along with the retreat broadened my perspective in defining the word “public”. My awareness of the rings of “publicity” and the impact on our city’s ability to meet the service and administrative needs of its residents is due to my experience as a member of LNY XIII.
