Meet Coro NY's New Executive Director Scott Millstein
The Coro New York Leadership Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Scott Millstein as Executive Director, effective August 15, 2008. Through his leadership, Millstein will advance Coro’s mission of developing the next generation of civic leaders who will be agents of change and stewards of New York City’s communities. "We are delighted to have Scott lead Coro in this next critical phase of development. He combines a strong passion for Coro's mission of civic leadership training with a demonstrated record of managerial achievement in the public and non-profit sectors," said Jonathan Plutzik, Board Chair, Coro New York Leadership Center.
The organization’s principles remain more powerfully relevant today than ever before. Coro brings together leaders from government, corporate, media, labor and non-profit sectors to encourage an open dialogue and help solve the City’s problems. In this season of elections, we are reminded of the importance of a key belief embedded in Coro’s mission: democracy is not a static concept but a choice that must be taught and continually renewed.
“I am thrilled to join the Coro New York Leadership Center. Having worked in public service for my entire professional career, I have seen the impact of effective leadership. I believe that training tomorrow’s leaders is one of the best investments we can make in the future of our city. I look forward to building on Coro’s proud 25-year history in New York and working with the staff, board and 2,000 distinguished alumni to play an even more vital role in the civic life of New York City,” said Millstein.
After nearly five years of dynamic and distinguished service, Michael Hirschhorn, Coro New York’s current Executive Director, will return to his successful consulting practice serving the non-profit and philanthropic sectors. Under Michael's leadership – and in partnership with Coro’s talented staff, board members and hundreds of alumni volunteers – the organization has made great strides. Michael is immensely proud to turn over the reigns to such a respected and accomplished colleague.
Coro New York will introduce Scott to the Coro community at the 2008 Lewis Rudin Awards for Civic Leadership dinner later this week on Wednesday, May 21st at Chelsea Piers. He will be joined on stage by exceptional honorees: Carla A. Harris, Managing Director in Global Capital Markets at Morgan Stanley; Bill T. Jones, Co-Founder and artistic director of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company; Danny Meyer, President of the Union Square Hospitality Group; and Marcy Syms, CEO of SYMS Corp.
Millstein has spent the last 10 years in senior positions at Safe Horizon, the country’s leading victim assistance organization. His experience encompasses all aspects of financial, fundraising, and programmatic operations during a significant period of growth and expansion. During his tenure, Safe Horizon was recognized as one of the top 10 organizations by the New York Times Non-Profit Excellence Awards.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Millstein also holds a graduate degree in public administration from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He serves on the National Advisory Board of the Center for Community Partnerships, which strengthens local, national and international networks of higher education institutions committed to engagement with their local communities. Further work experience includes his position as the Special Assistant to the Commissioner at the New York City Department of Homeless Services as well as other NYC agencies including the Mayor’s Office and the Parks Department.
