Mission and Approach
Coro New York Leadership Center equips individuals of all ages and from all backgrounds with the knowledge and skills they need to play active civic leadership roles across the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
Coro New York works on two tracks simultaneously: it trains leaders from across sectors, ages and neighborhoods to better understand the policies, systems, and decision-making processes that govern New York City; it also encourages them to assess and enhance their individual and collective leadership in order to affect positive change in civic life.
Coro’s training approach is inquiry-based and experiential. Coro uses New York City as a classroom to investigate current public policy dilemmas, gather information from multiple stakeholders, listen to diverse voices, and extract strategies to effect change in the community. A typical Coro program involves face-to-face interaction with public, private and non-profit decision-makers, group governance activities, communication skills development, community building, and focused reflection.
In total, each year, Coro serves 200 participants and an additional 1,800 alumni. Our programs are aimed at four target groups: New York City high school students, early and mid-career professionals, and individuals working with immigrant communities in New York City.
All of Coro’s programs prepare a cadre of leaders who will assume meaningful roles in the governance of our society. They will be able to grasp and respond to diverse perspectives, analyze and approach complex challenges, build networks across sectors, define and tackle a vision, and effect change on behalf of the causes or communities to which they are committed.
