Kate Bredrup, Exploring Leadership Program Director

Kate Bredrup is the Director of our Exploring Leadership Program that develops young people to become civic leaders in their schools, communities, and beyond and to expand youth voice in civic decision-making. Previously she was a tenth grade English teacher at the School for Democracy and Leadership. During that time, Kate began to work in affiliation with Coro as a teacher liaison, supporting the work of the youth ambassador groups at her campus. Prior to teaching, Kate held positions within both marketing and business development arenas. Kate holds a B.A. in English Literature and Comparative Religious Studies from the University of Virginia as well as an M.A.T. from National Louis University in Chicago. She reads, writes, walks and runs as often as she can. Currently, she is learning how to love the Chicago Bears from a distance.

Elvira Catter-Martinez, Program Coordinator

Elvira is the Program Coordinator for Coro’s four leadership training programs (Immigrant Civic Leadership Program, Leadership New York, Fellows Program in Public Affairs and Exploring Leadership). She has coordinated programs for federal, state, and nonprofit organizations and enjoys helping others. Elvira has a passion for leadership and personal development training and believes that change is not only possible, but a goal. Prior to joining Coro, Elvira spent a year as an AmeriCorps member helping communities in Manhattan and the Bronx connect with their local community gardens. She loves spending time with her husband Alessandro, her dogs, and rereading Pride and Prejudice.  Elvira’s other passion is sustainability—she enjoys reducing her footprint and helping others do the same; she earned her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Florida International University.

Aditi Chakravarty, Recruitment and Outreach Manager

Aditi oversees the recruitment and selection cycles of Coro’s four training programs, as well as manages the outreach and coordination of internship placements for the Fellows Program and the Exploring Leadership Program. Aditi is a graduate of Barnard College, where she studied socio-cultural anthropology and music and cultivated passions for cultural research and advocacy for music/the performing arts. Prior to joining Coro, Aditi worked as the Media Relations Coordinator at the Times Square Alliance, serving as the primary contact for media coverage of “New Year’s Eve in Times Square”. She began her work at the Times Square Alliance as an Everett Public Service intern in 2005. Outside the office, Aditi is an opera singer who trains and performs regularly in New York and elsewhere.

Claire Comstock-Gay, Alumni and Outreach Coordinator

 Claire works to keep the Coro alumni community connected with each other and with Coro, as well as, by promoting the Coro community as a volunteer resource and connecting alumni to opportunities in the city. Before coming to Coro, Claire helped coordinate an ESL tutoring program in Des Moines, Iowa, and interned with a human rights organization in St. Petersburg, Russia. She is a graduate of Grinnell College, where she studied Russian and Gender & Women’s Studies. She loves contemporary Russian fiction, queer theory, exploring Brooklyn, and her cat Ernie.

 

Kristen Illes, Senior Director of Programs

Kristen joined the Coro New York Leadership Center in September, 2009 as Senior Director of Programs.  Her focus will be on working with the team of talented program and recruitment staff to support ongoing high quality programs in alignment with Coro’s mission, strategic plan and Theory of Change.  Kristen’s career has been focused in the not-profit sector and for close to 15 years has been privileged to hold management positions with a focus on training.  Kristen is an avid learner who loves the possibilities that arise from the practice of leadership, vision, collaboration and teamwork.  Balancing work, the all-important life aspect includes spending time with her son Connor, partner Jeff, family and friends.  Summertime, she will be in the sun by the water or in her flower gardens and during the winter you will find her in the kitchen cooking something delicious for Sunday dinner.

Maya Lampson, Program Director for Leadership New York

Maya is the Program Director for Leadership New York (LNY). Training and professional development have been the continuing thread of her varied experience in the non-profit, philanthropic and government sectors. She earned a self-designed Bachelor of Arts from Dominican University in San Rafael, California and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Baruch College via the National Urban Fellows program in New York City. Previously, Maya organized training and orientation for program staff at the Ford Foundation. She enjoys the challenge and satisfaction of bringing out the best in people and organizations. In her personal life, Maya is taking on Spanish, cooking and dancing the tango.

Scott Millstein, Executive Director

Scott has spent the last 10 years in senior positions at Safe Horizon, the country’s leading victim assistance organization. His experience at Safe Horizon encompasses all aspects of financial, fundraising, and programmatic operations during a significant period of growth and expansion. Scott has also served as the Special Assistant to the Commissioner at the New York City Department of Homeless Services as well as at other NYC agencies including the Mayor’s Office and the Parks Department. Scott is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and holds an M.P.A. from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He serves on the National Advisory Board of the Center for Community Partnerships.

Christopher Neal, Program Facilitator

J. Christopher Neal is a “native son” of Detroit Michigan. The son of two talented artists, Harold L. Neal, a celebrated painter, and Claire Neal, a classically trained vocalist, Christopher is a painter and began his formal art training at Mumford High School and at the Center (now College) for Creative Studies' Saturday Workshops. He later went on to study Fine Art, African-American Studies, and Women's Studies at Eastern Michigan University. After completing his undergraduate studies he enrolled in Howard University's Master's of Fine Arts program, not quite sure of his prospects but open to the journey. Christopher came to Coro with an Arts Education background, which he began developing shortly after arriving in New York City. He has taught in classrooms across all five Boroughs and Connecticut. He is currently the Program Facilitator for the Exploring Leadership program.

Eve Nunez, Database Administrator

Eve helps Coro achieve its database, research, and analysis needs as the Database Administrator. As an undergrad, she participated in a four-year internship at Green Haven Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Upstate New York, and developed a profound sense of commitment to social issues and the non-profit sector and an appreciation for a liberal arts degree. For the last fourteen years, Eve has been working for CASES, an alternative to incarceration program, first as a case manager, then as the lead database specialist/administrator for the IT department, helping CASES fulfill its mission statement through constant vigilance and analysis of its greatest asset - data. In her free time, Eve enjoys cycling along the Hudson River, playing chess, keeping up with CERN developments, and coming up with reasons why she should get a puppy.

Clara Park, Alumni & Outreach Coordinator

Clara recently joined the Coro staff as Alumni & Outreach Coordinator. She provides support in selection and recruitment activities for all four programs and helps solicit and develop internship placements for the Fellows and Exploring Leadership Programs. Clara holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, with a minor in Human Rights, from Trinity College (CT). She is passionate about working with youth and has a great deal of experience doing so, both abroad and in her community. In her free time Clara enjoys traveling, playing her acoustic guitar, and baking for her friends and family.

Jennifer Schecter, Development Manager

Jennifer's primary responsibility is to enhance the relationships among Coro and its alumni, in addition to events and donor stewardship. She comes to Coro from Bnai Zion Foundation, where she spent nearly three years working in development. Jennifer studied Literature, Creative Writing, and Anthropology at Ball State University, African-American Studies and Oral History at Columbia University, and Improv Comedy at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. She enjoys cooking, baking, and running in New York City parks in daylight.

Stefanie Scott, Alumni Community Director

Stefanie is not only an alumna of a Coro program (Leadership NY XV), but she is now taking over the newly created role of Alumni Community Director for the New York Leadership Center.  Her primary functions will be to develop and define the programming, communications and social media strategies to engage all who have participated in Coro’s New York programs.  Stefanie comes to Coro with a wide range of experience in the public, private and non profit sector.  Most recently she was at Standard & Poor’s where she oversaw event and product marketing for a global portfolio of external client programs. A native of Brooklyn, NY, she holds a B.A. in Political Science from Boston University.     

Eddie Shiomi, Director of the Fellows Program in Public Affairs

Eddie has served as the director of the Fellows Program in Public Affairs at the Coro New York Leadership center since 2004. He is a graduate of the Fellows Program in Los Angeles (1998). After completing the Fellows Program, Eddie served as a Special Assistant to former California State Assembly Speaker Robert M. Hertzberg. He also served as co-chair of the Asian Pacific American Gala Reception for the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Eddie moved to New York City in 2002 and designed/implemented the New York City Public Safety Corps, an AmeriCorps National Service program through the Center for Court Innovation. Eddie holds a B.S. from UCLA.
